Kibbles and Bits

A few small matters:

I have a new post up at ALA TechSource about skills that deteriorate (and develop) with the use of technology.

loveandjoy

(the birds say love and joy)

Kathy Sierra said nice things about libraries on Twitter (and the ass-kicking Kathryn Greenhill had the presence of mind to blog it), which was heartening and lovely to hear – it will warm your cockles now that the temperature is dropping (at least here in New England, where no one can feel their toes).

Finally, a housekeeping note – I’ve changed the theme of my blog and it’s given me this cute feature called “Asides” which show up below the main post on the page. I’ve been using it experimentally to share interesting links, but I think that’s perhaps too much clutter from me.

My thinking is that rather than adding links as I find them, I’ll save it up and add them once a day (at most). If that’s going to make you unsubscribe or glare at me at conferences, please let me know.

I hope everyone is having a peaceful and joyous end of the year/holiday season/start to the serious cold. Stay warm, be well, and take some time for yourself.

  • I like the new theme, I've enjoyed the links you've been sharing, and I'm really happy that you're posting more often. So there will be no glaring and I'm pretty sure there won't be any unsubscribing, at least from me, especially if you choose a category or tag for those posts that consist mostly of links and choose another category or tag for your essays. As long as the categories/tags are consistent, I can subscribe to two separate feeds (see http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Feeds) even if you don't choose to publicize them.

That may not seem like such a big deal, but I tend to prioritize reading essays during the breaks I do my best to give myself each day. Knowing I have a new essay by one of my favorite writers waiting for me is a great incentive to complete my high priority tasks, even if they're difficult or tedious.

For the most part, I save links and link posts for the weekend. Not that they aren't useful. They're just less likely to fit into the rhythm of my typical workday.

Brett, you are the reason I even thought to ask about link sharing. You are one of the most thoughtful (and, uh, organized) readers (and writers) I know and you've made me more conscious about what people need from the stuff that comes into their feed reader!

The link posts will all have the category "Asides" since that's how the theme knows what to do with them, which works out well for those parsing the feed (http://loosecannonlibrarian.net/category/asides... should shunt all the asides post into wherever you'd like them to go). I've been lazy about categorizing my non-link posts, but I just created a category called "main" for longer posts. (http://loosecannonlibrarian.net/category/main/feed)

Thanks much for the input and the info about Wordpress RSS.
