This is less a blog post and more of a PSA. On Sunday night, I was checking my bank account online and noticed a charge for $2.95 from bestsmartstore.com. I had never heard of that site before and didn’t recall buying anything online for $2.95. I Googled the address (feeling rather like all those Internet newbies we hear about who put URLs into Google rather than the address bar) and found this article from the Austin American-Statesman about debit card scams along with a few confused and angry posts on message boards.
The scam seems to revolve around ebooks, with several stores being used to charge small amounts for imaginary ebooks to lots of people. I suspect this works well on people who don’t use online banking. I would have assumed I made a mistake while balancing my checkbook and probably never noticed the charge if I wasn’t an online banking fan.
The stores in question are bestsmartstore.com, Digismarket.com, and MyLiberia.com. So, check your account.
On the library-related housekeeping front: LibraryThing for Libraries is not showing in Danbury’s catalog. III upgraded us to Pro on Monday, which means the code for LTFL has to move to a template that we had not been using. The template is mostly together, but I’m having some CSS angst. Fortunately, Danbury has a fantastic new webmaster to sort it out. We should have it up and running again soon.
