Yes, it does seem to be a widespread trait and I think we must control it just a little - in order not to "mother hen" people, where they don't need to think any more OR overwhelm them.

I was interested to see you relate kindness to your interest in Buddhism, because I have an interest in Gaudiya Vaisnavism (the two are connected, at least according to the Vaisnavas) which emphasizes service and humility, as well as compassion and kindness, much like Buddhism. Yet, i'm working in cataloging because I find that I "run out of nice" whenever someone is not kind to me. I know these are the patrons we should work harder to be nice to, but my conditioning is such that I find it difficult to be kind to unkind people. I guess I tend to take everything personally. Anyway, I was wondering what you have to say about kindness to the unkind, since you're on this kindness streak.

Posted at my desk is a little quote by "Sandi from Florida" that came to me in some way I can't remember now - the quote is:
"If we choose being kind over being right, we will be right every time."
Peace and Blessings from Memphis!

Clicking through via Bloglines to say thanks for this post. I'd already read the Darien Statements 4 or 5 times before reading this--I liked & appreciated them but it felt strange not to have the "blown away by the awesome" reaction many others have had. This post touches me more--I was thinking that as I read it--that THIS is my library manifesto--and so how surprising to see that the D Statements were what inspired it [grin].
